It’s always the first thing I do when I get my hands on a roster sheet: scour for a freshman.
It’s simple, really. Any freshman that can make varsity must be good — really good. It takes the thinking variableĀ out of the player evaluation equation.
I’ve seen some really good statewide freshmen this year, including Lansing Eastern’s Charles Tucker (he’s the best), Detroit Pershing’s Kahil Felder and Flint Carman-Ainsworth’s Denzel Watts, who has been compared to Mateen Cleaves.
Now check out these Flint-area freshmen on Hotbed Hoops.
One name that’s probably missing is Flint Northern’s JD Tisdale. He’s really good.

Absolutely correct on Tisdale belonging although his numbers won’t stand out…yet. Also, think about that Morris, Lewis, Tisdale, and Turczyn all played AAU together along with GB soph. Jordan Fields. Now that’s a SERIOUS backcourt group!
My fault on Tisdale. Just added him. He was in my notes, just totally spaced on putting him on.
So do you know how you would rank the freshmans???
I know Gavin likes Haney from EL for the no. 1 spot.
I really think Tucker is no. 1 and then Haney, Felder, Morris, Watts, etc.
FYI…..Denzell Watts’ was held back after the 7th grade and he should be a sophmore right now….age not grade should be considered when evaluating the ceiling on these kids. A lot of these kids, like Watts, are old and that will catch up down the road. Tucker and Haney are both 14, not 15 or 16 like some of these other “Freshmen” that is why I think they are #1 and #2 in whatever order you prefer.
Well I haven’t seen all of them play but I would have to say Monte Morris and Richmond Lewis is the to top n the state. I say that because they just play with a high basketball IQ.
