Dawkins, son of Saginaw High coach Lou Dawkins, collapsed and died at a basketball camp at Michigan State in 2009. Dawkins had an undiagnosed heart condition (acute myocardial ischemia).
To honor his brother, as well as raise money for the American Heart Association, Vaughn-Dawkins organized the first-ever Show Your Heart Memorial Classic last season, featuring some of the best high school teams in the Midwest.
The second annual even has another lineup of fantastic games. The event is today (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) at Delta College. Admission is $10 for the entire day, which features three games.
The most intriguing one for Flint area fans will definitely be Flint Beecher vs. Detroit Consortium at 1 p.m. Beecher, a state semi-finalist a year ago in Class C, will face arguably the top team in the state in that class. The Bucs are led by Monte Morris and recently were bolstered by the return of guard Antuan Burks, who missed the first half of the season after getting injured during football season. Together, Morris and Burks might form the best defensive backcourt in the state regardless of class.
Consortium, currently 7-0, has a much bigger frontline than Beecher, but don’t pay attention to that. Beecher has made a habit of beating teams that have major size advantages under coach Mike Williams.
The point guard matchup will be worth the price of admission, with Morris against Consortium’s Travon Baker.
Here is the schedule:
- Flint Beecher vs. Detroit Consortium, 1 p.m.
- Thea Bowman Academy (Gary, Indiana) vs. Robichaud High School, 3 p.m.
- Saginaw High vs. Chicago Orr High School, 5 p.m.
Getting to see those three games for $10 is a huge bargain, and the proceeds are helping a worthy cause.
