No. 1-ranked Mott Community College will get it’s first road test of the season Wednesday night, and it’s a doozy. The Bears will travel to Owens (Ohio) to take on the 8-4 Express coached by former Mott and Toledo assistant Dave Clark.
Mott fans can listen to the game live on MRSN starting at 7:30 p.m.
Owens, in my oh-so humble opinion, is the best team on Mott’s schedule, at least in terms of talent. The Express have two of the top JUCO players in Ohio in 6-7 sophomore forward James Kelly and 6-5 sophomore guard Justin Edmonds. Both players average nearly 18 points per contest. Freshman point guard Joe Retic II may well be the key to Owens success moving forward. If he can take care of the ball, Owens will be a tough out in the district tournament.
Mott counters with a more balanced offensive led by sophomore forward Fred Mattison (22 ppg), freshman center Coreante DeBerry (12 ppg) and freshman guard Malik Albert (13 ppg). Mott has more depth than Owens, but if the starters don’t play well as a group in their first road game, it’s going to be curtains.
Mattison versus Kelly is going to be a great matchup.
Prediction: Mott by a razor-thin margin — four points or less.
