Lake Fenton senior Darian Welch put his team on his back tonight, leading the Blue Devils to their first win of the season. It’s an important win on a few fronts: It was the first varsity win for the Blue Devils’ 21-year-old head coach Jacob Erway; it was a win over an unbeaten team (Lakeville was 3-0); and the win marks the halfway point to program’s win total from last season.
I may have to get out to see how this kid is getting it done. After his 36-point outburst on Friday night, his season average through three games is just short of 30 points per game.
He got the David Kool treatment tonight, going 17-for-20 from the foul line.
Congrats to the Blue Devils and Coach Erway on the first of what will hopefully be many victories this season.
Flint Hamady’s Erick Layton joined Welch in the 30-point club. Layton had 30 points and nine rebounds in a win over Byron. Those two may well battle for the Flint area scoring title this season with Beecher’s Monte Morris, who scored 18 points in three quarters in a 20-point win over Goodrich.
