Eric Mowery had 15 points and 12 assists vs. Holly.

FENTON, Michigan — The so-called basketball purists out there who lament the loss of pass-first point guard are not getting out to enough Fenton games.

Fenton senior Eric Mowery might be the best game-manager in the Flint area, and although the Fenton coaching staff knew his importance to their team, the point was driven home when they had to play a game without Mowery last week against Lapeer West. Minus Mowery, who missed the game because of a concussion, Fenton played disjointed, they struggled to get into their offense and their defense couldn’t stay in front of Lapeer West point guard Cullen Turczyn. The result was a 15-point loss that dropped Fenton into a tie for first place in the league standings heading into a pivotal week where they had to play both Holly and Swartz Creek, the two teams challenging Fenton for the league title. The Tigers are who we thought they were, and Swartz Creek didn’t let them off the hook.

Swartz Creek played aggressive in Friday’s showdown with state-ranked Fenton, and it caused the Tigers to fold. The physical play started by covering veteran point guard Eric Mowery the length of the court with a rotation of athletic guards. It didn’t take long for Mowery to show the typical signs of fatigue with hands on the hips and shortly thereafter hands on the knees. But the physical play didn’t stop there. (more…)

There wasn’t much on Monday’s slate of area basketball games, but the Fenton-Holly matchup seemed interesting. Fenton is once again off to an undefeated start in the Metro League, and really, Swartz Creek, Holly and maybe Kearsley are the only teams with legit shots at the league title, which was shared by Fenton and Swartz Creek last year.

Fenton won 51-48, but it was a weird game from start to finish. It was Fenton’s first win of the season that wasn’t by double-digits, so Holly played them as well as any team has so far, even if Fenton can point to the fact that Ryan Hickoff, the Metro League’s third leading scorer, missed the game because he was sick.
