Pierre Brackett leads Flint Powers to win over Swartz Creek

SWARTZ CREEK, Michigan — Jeremy Trent had a choice to make Tuesday night. Coming off a big win over previously unbeaten Fenton on Friday night, Swartz Creek’s head coach could have played Metro League ball with Flint Powers, one of the top teams in the state. He could have slowed the game down, sat back in a lazy man’s zone, lost by 15 called it a night.

Clearly Trent scheduled Powers to prepare his team for the rest of the season, and he didn’t change a thing about the way his team plays. The Dragons fell to Powers 92-69, but don’t be fooled by the score — this was a competitive game. Powers led by four at the half and actually trailed by six with four minutes left in the third quarter before the floodgates opened.

Hardwood Hardware: GLH’s 2009-10 Flint-area Awards

After every season, we try to give players around Mid-Michigan some love with our postseason awards. This year, we will hand out awards for the Flint area, the Tri-Cities and Lansing. Flint is first.

Hardwood Hardware: Flint Area Edition

Most Valuable Player: Cody Campbell, senior, Swartz Creek: Campbell led the Dragons in scoring, assists and 3-point shooting percentage (44%). He’s the best ballhandler I’ve ever seen in that league and among the best players. Campbell helped turn a .500 team into a league champion. He led the league in scoring at 17.6 points per game and played several games early on with a broken wrist.

Player of the Year: Demarco Sanders, senior, Flint Powers — This award came down to two players on the same team: Sanders and fellow senior Patrick O’Brien. Sanders gets the nod, however, for emerging as one of the state’s top shooting guards after playing second fiddle for the previous two seasons. The southpaw led the Big Nine in scoring at 19.1 ppg and shot nearly 55% from the floor.

Sanders, Haney, Arnett, Hawkins and more: Player notes from the weekend

I had the opportunity to see a lot of top tier recruits this weekend and rather than writing individual game stories where everyone already knows the result, I just thought I would do a quick rundown of the individuals.

Deanthony Arnett 6’0′ Junior Saginaw High

He’s probably the fastest point guard in the state, period. Even though he missed the game winner against Powers on Sunday, it should be noted that Arnette made it almost the length of the court in three seconds flat. This kid has football offers from almost everywhere, but he’s legit on the hardwood as well.

Travon Baker  5’10”  Sophomore  Detroit Consortium

Travon is a sick point guard.  Ultra quick with the strength and touch to finish in the lane.  Needs to work on his shot mechanics, but the kid is one of the top sophomore point guards out there.    (more…)

Prediction: Skill will trump size tonight as Flint Powers takes on Flint C-A

The best game in Flint on Friday night is at Flint Carman-Ainsworth as the Cavaliers take on Big Nine rival Flint Powers.

On paper this looks like a really good game. The Cavs were a Patrick Lucas-Perry basket short of winning two out of three against the eventual class B state champions last season and return pretty much everybody.

This season, Flint Powers is as good or better and showed it on opening night against a pretty good Flint Northwestern squad.

Flint C-A, however, was on the ropes against a Grand Blanc team depleted by defection.

Standing ‘Pat’: Preseason Flint-area top 15 players

Here’s my list of top 15 players in the Flint area for 2009-10. I had decided to do 10 players, but there’s too much talent here for so few.

It’s early, but these are my guys:

1.) Patrick O’Brien, Senior, Flint Powers: All-around, he’s just the best.
2.) Patrick Lucas-Perry, Junior, Flint Powers: Great floor general.
3.) Glenn Cosey, Senior, Flint Carman-Ainsworth: Tough lead guard hampered by stodgy C-A offense.
4.) Shaq Smith, junior, Flint Northern: Mostly unguardable.
5.) William Sams, Senior, Montrose (transfer): Gets better every time I see him. I could see him scoring 20+ per game in the GAC Blue.

The Big Nine still strong, kind of, in a relative sort of way…

Glenn Cosey, for JC in Midland

The vultures are circling the Big er…Nine.  Four remain after this season’s defection of Grand Blanc.  Which team will be the next to leave the island?

Despite the losses, this is pound-for-pound, one of the best conferences in the state, including the returning B champion and an A powerhouse.  In other words, if you’re a non-conference opponent, then you have a 50 percent chance of being smashed.

I’m still crossing my fingers that somehow the Saginaw Valley League picks these teams up, but until then, this is how the conference looks for this season.
