Battle for Ballenger: Mott to face off against no. 1-ranked Monroe on Saturday

Posted: December 10, 2009 by Jared Field in High School

The best basketball game in Michigan this weekend will go down at the Steve Schmidt Gymnasium at Mott Community College. At 3 p.m., the Bears, now ranked no. 14 in the nation and 7-1, will take on no. 1-ranked and unbeaten Monroe (New York).

Steve Schmidt’s team will be ready, but will Bobby Lewis play?

The Bears have a history with Monroe, one of the top programs in the Midwest. Schmidt won the second of his three national championship rings against Monroe in 2007.

Can Mott and its nine freshmen stand up to the mighty Tribunes? It will only cost you five bucks to find out.

I did a little reading on the NJCAA web site about Monroe CC. They’re located in Rochester, NY with a school enrollment of 15,000. Interestingly, there’s also a Monroe College located in Bronx, NY. The two teams actually played each other on 11/22 with Monroe CC winning 92-87. This weekend’s Bruin Classic should be really good.
