Quick take: A Heritage win over Saginaw High would not be an upset

When the Heritage High Hawks meet up with Saginaw High on Friday night, the bulk of basketball fans in Mid-Michigan will probably have already chalked up a win for the Trojans.

It’s understandable, of course, as old habits die hard. This year might be different, though.

The Hawks return all five starters from a 13-win team that  performed admirably against top Saginaw Valley opponents last season.

In the Hawks’ opener on Tuesday night against Swan Valley, six players scored in double figures including 21 points from senior forward James Johnson.

The Hawks’ starting five should look like this:

F -James  Johnson, F-Lavario Smith, G-Chris Jones, G-A.J. Thomas and G-Devin Brackens.

This is a team chock-full of very good guards, with two of the better backcourt reserves in Mid-Michigan: Senior point guard T.J Wright (cousin to former Saginaw High star Larry Wright)  and sophomore P.J. Walker, whose father played at Ohio State.

Saginaw counters with a talented roster including 6-8 junior forward Tommie McCune, 6-6 sophomore forward Kevin Marshall, senior guard and son of head coach Lou Dawkins, 6-0 Christian Vaughn. They also return seniors DeAnthony Arnette (a top-flight wide receiver prospect) and senior guard Gregory Hayes.

The Trojans also picked up 6-2 forward Taron Boose from Flint Beecher who will not be eligible immediately.

All that to say this: Don’t be shocked if the Hawks win. In fact, don’t even call it an upset. Heritage is loaded with talent and not to be taken lightly.

James Johnson and A.J. Thomas are as good as anyone The High has to offer.

Sorry but be suprised if this team is as good as Lou first State Title team. If what I saw out of them Saturday at their scrimmage is concitant. They wont lose a game they are stacked from top 2 bottom. Saginaw beats them by 15+

I won’t be shocked either way. I just think it might take a little more time for Saginaw to mesh.

And it wouldn’t be the first time Heritage made me look like a fool.

Just finished reading the article on this game in todays Saginaw News. They mentioned Coach Dawkins son Christian Dawkins had returned after playing at a prep school. Is this the same player as Christian Vaughn? Why did he transfer to a prep school and why did he come back?

I try to watch a few High games a year (usually High v. Hill). Man is it hard to keep track of their players from year to year. I had no clue that Boose transferred to the High until a few days ago!

      • Jared Field says:

        Yeah. It’s Christian Vaughn.

He left looking for a good opportunity. Now he’s back presumably looking for a good opportunity.

I can’t figure out for the life of me why Boose went to Saginaw.
