Painting the town red: Swartz Creek clinches share of FML crown

Posted: March 4, 2010 by Jared Field in High School

SWARTZ CREEK , Michigan — It was a storybook ending to a dream season in Swartz Creek Thursday night.

The Dragons dismantled Lapeer West, one of only two conference foes to have beaten Swartz Creek this season, and won a share of the Flint Metro League championship. It is the school’s first conference crown in nearly two decades and the fans are painting the town red — well, more red.

It was all too appropriate that the final shot of senior guard Cody Campbell, the top player in the league this season, was a swished 3-pointer. He’ll never take another shot in a game on that floor, and it was the one that put him in the record books. Campbell now holds the school record for 3-pointers made in a season. The record had been held by his coach, Jeremy Trent, who came back to coach his alma mater this season after a successful stint at Burton Bentley.

The Dragons, behind the inspired play of Campbell and 6-5 senior forward Ethan Brouwer, ran Lapeer West out of the gym in the first half and emptied the bench in the second en route to a 70-45 win.

The Dragons will share the conference crown with Fenton, a team they similarly ran out of the gym on Jan. 29. Campbell led all scorers with 20 points.

Congrats Creek on a great season. You earned every accolade you have received this year. We look forward to “round 3” in the districts.

Is that like they got similarily ran out of Fentons gym the first game of the year? Too bad they couldn’t beat West the first time around. Maybe some props for the back to back champs???

    • Jared Field says:

Just for the record, Fenton was up three at the half on Creek in that game, up five after the third and won by 10. Not sure that is similar to the second game in which SC was up 20+ points in the fourth.

I don’t have a problem with Fenton. It’s just that the last time I saw the two Swartz Creek was better — much better. I think they atoned for the West loss last night. They were up like 32 in the second half.

      • linman says:

For the record Fenton was up 18 in the second and started subbing like they always do and the mo changed. At least Holly carried the banner for the Metro.

    • SC Fan says:

Keep in mind in that first contest Creek came back and actually had a 5 point lead in the 3rd. They were hardly run out of that gym. We agree, it is too bad that we lost at West. Without that loss there would have been no sharing of this title. Then, there would have been no back to back champs as well. Look at what Creek did the second time through and you’ll see a marked improvement. That’s the mark of a great team and a great coach! Winning 12 conference games in a row including at Holly deserves kudos. Well done Swartz Creek in grabbing a share of the Metro Title and Good Luck in Districts.

      • linman says:

Yes, Creek finally shared a title. I think 32-4 in league play is nothing to sneeze at. Go 16-2 again and then you will have something to talk about. If Fenton beats Holly when they were up by 10 in the 4th there is no shared title. Lots of ifs. This is the way of the world now, do something once and they should erect statues of everybody.

I also think you are seeing what Fenton can do when the whistle doesn’t blow every 10 seconds in a Metro game. They played Powers pretty tough and could have scored a 100+ on Davison, granted Davison isn’t the best but when you can’t play aggresive for fear of a whistle, it changes things. Hopefully the stars will line up and Fenton and Creek will have a chance to settle this. But thats alot of stars.
