Flint’s Jeff Grayer to be new assistant at Iowa State

Flint’s Jeff Grayer, a former NBAer and Olympian, will be returning to his alma mater to serve as an assistant coach. Here’s the rundown from GoCyclones.com

Since first stepping foot on the court at Hilton Coliseum in the 1980s Jeff Grayer’s accomplished a lot.

He became Iowa State’s all-time leading scorer. He was an NBA first-round draft pick. He even played in the Olympics.

Now, Grayer returns to the Cyclone basketball program — he was named an assistant coach Friday — with the task of helping it accomplish a lot more.

“It was obvious in our discussions how much Jeff wanted to get back to ISU and help reignite the magic in Hilton Coliseum,” ISU coach Greg McDermott said.

With Grayer hired, McDermott has finished restructuring his coaching staff. In March, former assistant Jeff Rutter became director of operations. Thursday, McDermott hired former Iowa Energy coach Nick Nurse.

Grayer’s first task as a coach will be to help turn ISU, which was 15-17 last year and hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2005, back into a winner.
