Under pressure: Tom Herzog heading to Florida to beat the heat

Posted: May 6, 2010 by Jared Field in College

Amazing that Tom Herzog is using his extra year of eligibility to play at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. According to one newspaper account, he couldn’t handle the heat in East Lansing.

From Mlive:

“He did help us in a lot of ways,” Izzo said. “He did help (Goran) Suton last year. As you guys know, when you’re at practice, he can block shots, he can run like a deer — he just struggles under the pressure sometimes, or the physical nature of things. He struggled with his conditioning a little bit. I don’t think it’s because he was out of shape, I just think he’d get nervous energy and he burned himself out.”

How’s that for a little brutal honesty? And while Herzog may very well have success at UCF, he couldn’t crack the rotation at MSU for two very simple reasons: Mental and physical toughness. A big man in the Big Ten must possess the second in abundance and the first, as long as your coach is Tom Izzo, as well. He didn’t and the rest is history.

I wish Herzog well in his final season. And please, like I noticed one commenter mention, don’t call Herzog’s career at MSU a failure. Give him credit for perseverance. He could have gone “Crater” and quit as soon as he realized he wasn’t going to be the man in East Lansing.

I thought he was going to Bowling Green?

I wish him nothing but great success. He deserves a shot to finish on a high note in his basketball career.

Do not understand the title saying UNDER PRESSURE. Is that implying that he was getting pressured to leave?

That aside – pretty mature decision by the young man actually. And what kid from the North with an undergrad degree already in his pocket would not want a free year in Florida?

One one hand I suspect he will play well enough that he might think – “wow I should have went somewhere other than MSU.”

On the other hand, I would be surprised if he has a successful year to the point where Izzo kicks himself in the butt for not giving him more clock.

WOTS Luciouss and Allen could transfer.
