FLINT, Michigan — On April 30, 2010, Steve Schmidt, longtime head men’s basketball coach at Mott Community College, was inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Men’s Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. That is a cause for celebration.

The community is invited to join MCC to celebrate and honor one of the most successful basketball coaches in the nation at A Salute to Steve Schmidt, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 24, 2010 in MCC’s Applewood Café. A brief program is scheduled for 5 p.m. Refreshments will be available. This event is free and open to the public.

Steve Schmidt became MCC’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach in 1991. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, he shaped the program into one of the nation’s most recognized and successful programs. The MCC Bears have never had a losing season during Coach Schmidt’s tenure. He has led the team to three National Championships. After winning the first national championship in 2003, the Bears won two more national titles back-to-back in 2007 and 2008. He also received National Coach of the Year honors each of those years.

Schmidt has coached and helped develop three national players of the year and 15 All-Americans. He currently holds the record for the highest winning percentage in national tournament history. In addition to his induction in the NJCAA Hall of Fame, he is a 2006 inductee of the Greater Flint Area Hall of Fame. In 2009, Mott Community College named the gymnasium at Ballenger Field House the Steve Schmidt Gymnasium.

“It’s hard to describe,” Schmidt stated when he learned of his induction into the Hall of Fame. “The fact of the matter is that I have not won a single game by myself. I have been assisted by loyal coaches and talented and dedicated players. All of this is possible because of them – and that is a perspective I’ve never lost.”
