FLINT, Michigan — On Thursday afternoon, Mott Community College will honor head coach Steve Schmidt for his induction into the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

On Friday night, it’s his turn to honor the players he says got him there.

“I was inducted into the hall of fame, but we couldn’t have had this level of success at Mott without the commitment and dedication of so many players who are a part of this family,” said Schmidt, who will honor his former players Friday night at 8 p.m. at the Steve Schmidt Gymnasium during the first “One Team, One Family” alumni game. “They are the reason we have three national championship banners hanging in the gym.”

The game will immediately follow the Bruin Club All-Star Game, hosted by Mott annually for the best high school seniors in the Flint area. The Bruin Club game starts at 6 p.m.

“This is going to be a great night of basketball in Flint,” Schmidt said. “You’re going to be able to see many future college players and guys who’ve made it on the big stage, professional players who have literally gone from Mott to play basketball all over the world.”

It’s true that one would be hard-pressed to find a better alumni base at the JUCO level anywhere in the country. The game will feature players like Jeremie Simmons (Ohio State), Kevin Tiggs (ETSU and Ukraine), Thomas Kennedy (University of Detroit), Lamar Rice (Clemson, Japan), Jerel Allen (Florida State, Ukraine), Jay Youngblood (Kent State, Austria), Terrence Watson (Ball State) and more.

The cost is $5 for both games.
