OUCH: Swartz Creek draws Clarkston in opening round of districts

Posted: December 1, 2010 by Jared Field in High School

Swartz Creek, an up-and-coming program in the Flint area, will be opening district play this season with a school twice its size. I guess the larger point is that Clarkston is one of the better basketball schools in the state and will be heavily favored.

I know it’s early to be talking about districts, but for Swartz Creek this is like a major Press-Your-Luck style whammy.

Also, Holly will play Grand Blanc in round one. That will be a great game; one that might be turning into a rivalry.

  1. Yeah, there was some weird reshuffling of districts going on this year. Northwestern, who got significantly stronger with the addition of Burnett, hosts a terrible district with Northern removed and the likes of Kearsley, Davison, Clio, Lapeer East, and Lapeer West left to play against. Talk about a FREE district title. Saginaw Heritage gets out of the Saginaw battle and moves to Bay City district with Western, Central, Midland, Dow, and Mt. Pleasant (minus Ziegler). Replacing Heritage in the Saginaw Arthur Hill district is Flint Northern with Saginaw, Hill, Carman Ainsworth, Flushing, and Owosso. Someone help me understand these moves…

were is this posted at and who is in grand blancs district?

  3. Dave12 says:

Grand Blanc should have their way with a weak Holly team

  4. Skywalker says:

If were going to feel sorry for anyone…. How about Goodrich drawing Powers again? They have had lot of talent get wiped out in the first game of the districts for a number of years now and probably again this year. There’s plenty of sob stories out there. Not sure why you would pick to feature Swartz Creek…

    • Jared Field says:

That’s not a story. Goodrich has been playing Powers in districts for years.

I don’t know if it’s a story, but Creek drawing a school like Clarkston is about as bad as it gets. Typically Flint area teams don’t see C-Town until regionals or quarters.

  5. Hoopsguru says:

The drawas have not taken place so we do not know who plays who yeat – just who is in each district.

  6. Hs hoops says:

Is Williams and fields grand blancs only players or do they have an all around good roster

  7. Hs hoops says:

Who is this sauvola kid I’m hearing about

  8. CoachT says:

    where is this information posted

  9. SOWHAT says:

SO WHAT?EVEN THOUGH SWARTZ CREEK IS A SMALLER THAT STILL DOESN’T MEAN THAT THEY CAN’T WIN!!!JUST BECAUSE NORTHWESTERN GOT BURNETT THAT DOESN’T MEAN THAT THE OTHER SCHOOLS ARE JUST GONNA HAND THEM THE TITLE.RANKINGS AND REPUTATIONS DON’T MEAN JACK.NORTHWESTERN EVEN PROVED THAT WHEN THEY SHUT DOWN SAGINAW ARTHUR HILL WHO EVERYONE THOUHT WOULD WIN A FEW YEARS AGO AND LIMITED MAURICE JONES TO 15 POINTS.YOU’LL NEVER KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN.

  10. Jared Field says:

Yeah. They should probably still play the game.

  11. SO WHAT says:

HARD WORK BEATS TALENT ALL THE TIME!IF SWARTZ CREEK TRAINS HARD EVERYDAY AND QUIT WORRYING ABOUT WHO THEY HAVE TO PLAY,THEN THEY CAN WIN.

  12. HEW says:

Bay City Western beat Clarkston in all 3 20-minute scrimmages today… Do not overlook them this year! Clarkston however had some guy injured however, although I don’t know how much it would’ve helped. All I know is their PF/C couldn’t get anything going against Costello/Havercamp although #23 on their team was stroking it. However Costello/Havercamp/Ellis really took it to them. Apparently it’s a “down year” for Clarkston from what I’ve heard.

  13. HEW says:

Take out one of those “howevers”^^

  14. SO WHAT says:

@HEW: you guys probaly won not because clarkston is having a bad year, but because your team outworked them and wanted the victory more.

  15. What? says:

@ HEW: Hmmm from what I heard, Clarkston won the first 20 minute period by 10 points. Then the 2nd 20 minute period Bay City Westerns starters beat Clarkston’s second string ( 2 returning juniors, 1 returning sophomore and 2 JV players which NONE of the returners got ANY playing time unless it was a blowout last season). Then to finish up I heard they did not keep score in the 3rd period but it was obvious that Clarkston would have won the period with starters playing. I’m not saying that Bay City Western isn’t a good team, but from how the game sounds to have gone, they would not have beaten a Clarkston team playing 8 or 9 deep like they will play in the season. And no offense to “SO WHAT” but Clarkston (on most nights) will not lose because they get out worked. Fife will pull his top scorer of any game if he feels that they aren’t putting 110% effort into the whole game…
