Whoopsy: Illinois and Oakland play with women’s ball

Posted: December 9, 2010 by Jared Field in College

It’s not every day I read something about the game that I’ve never read before. Thanks to Steve Bell for tracking down this story about Illinois’ recent victory over Oakland.

From Chicagobreakingsports.com:

But on Wednesday, when Illinois started off its 74-63 victory over Oakland ice cold — something seemed suspicious.
After all, this was the same Illinois team that hit 11-for-13 3-pointers during one stretch Saturday against Gonzaga. On Wednesday, the Illini began it was 3-for-13 from the field. Turns out, the ball may have contributed to that.

For over seven minutes of the game, the two teams played using a women’s ball, which is smaller in circumference and lighter than a regulation-size men’s ball.
