Some notes from Friday night: Cory Jones, Syrus McDonald, Chris Harrison-Docks and more

Posted: December 11, 2010 by Jared Field in High School

The game of the night in Mid-Michigan featured a guard showdown that won’t soon be forgotten. Class A Okemos, at home, defeated class C Saginaw Buena Vista by three in overtime. Okemos’ top guard, Chris Harrison-Docks, scored 32 points in the victory. His counterpart, BV’s George Goodman, scored 33 before having to leave the game with two minutes left with a cramp. Harrison-Docks is a surefire mid-major D-1 guard while some see Goodman as a shooting guard in a point guard’s body. Anyone who can score like Goodman will get an opportunity at the next level. (Last season we wondered aloud if GG was the best junior guard in Mid-Michigan.)

Senior point guard Syrus McDonald led Flint Northwestern to a big win over rival Flint Northern on Friday night with 17 points and 10 assists. He also had the game-winning steal and free throws to seal the 4-point win.

A name to know for the future is 6-4 junior forward Cory Jones. He was a beast in his middle schools days in Flint but hadn’t been able to put it together in two years of high school. This year should be different. Jones scored 23 points in Flint Southwestern’s opening game against Midland Dow. This southpaw has excellent touch around the basket.

Junior Nathan Landsgaard of Goodrich scored a game-high 24 points in the Martians’ 68-56 win over LakeVille on Friday night. If you think LakeVille is a push-over, you’re wrong. Landsgaard is one of the top guards in the area and has the potential to be the best guard at Goodrich in years. His former AAU teammate Josh Fugate of Holly scored 23 points in the Broncho’s win last night over Brandon.

Who you think are the top player in the area on a losing team? That might make an impact at the college level just wanting to know? There a couple of teams who start getting thier chemistry by mid season.
