Mott hosts talented Delta squad at 7:30 p.m. tonight

A.J. Thomas, Delta College

Mott Community College (12-2) will have its hands full tonight as they host Delta College (6-7) at the Steve Schmidt Gymnasium in Flint. And while the records wouldn’t necessarily dictate a competitive game, no one will be surprised to see just that.

Delta lost to Henry Ford by a point over Christmas break and has the talent to be competitive on any given night. Led by sophomores Brad Norman and Winthrop Thomas, the Pioneers led most of the way versus Henry Ford but couldn’t finish off the Hawks late.

Against Mott, the Pioneers will lean heavily upon their freshman point guard A.J. Thomas, who must take better care of the ball against Mott’s pressure defense than he did against HFCC. He’s very capable, however, of making plays even against top-notch defenders.

Mott will look to the post early and often against the Pioneers, who will have difficulty with the Bears’ triumvirate of scorers — Mike Brigham, Leviante Davis and Doug Anderson.

The Bears are riding a 10-game win streak and, as the schedule dictates, this could be a classic trap game before Wednesday night’s clash with Henry Ford. I don’t think Mott’s coaching staff will let that happen, but I still look for a competitive game against an up-and-coming program.

Prediction: Mott 81, Delta 70

  2. Delta has some talent. I was impressed with their toughness. If they get some more depth next year, they could be a force.
