I don’t think anyone was surprised to see that Buctown took down Saginaw Buena Vista last night in a clash of two of the state’s best teams in class C. What should surprise you, however, is how they did it.

The Bucs fought back from an 11-point deficit in the first half AND gave up 41 points to senior guard George Goodman on their way to the win. Goodman, one of the state’s best and least-known players, shot 7-for-9 in the first half alone.

For the Bucs, it was a young man the Flint Journal called an “unlikely hero” that gave them the extra boost in the second half to get the win, 89-82.

(Jequarius) French, the second player off of Beecher’s bench, scored 12 of his career-high 22 points in the third quarter as the second-ranked Buccaneers beat the fifth-ranked Knights, 89-82, Wednesday night in a battle of state Class C powers at Beecher.

French’s previous career best was 11 points. He averaged 6.6 points before Wednesday’s game.

Beecher coach Mike Williams called French, a 6-foot-3 junior who played junior varsity ball last season, “one of the hardest workers I’ve ever coached.”
