Kalamazoo Valley wins District 8, headed to nationals

Posted: March 6, 2011 by Jared Field in High School

To give you an idea of how lopsided the MCCAA was this season, here’s the final from the District 8 tournament:

Kalamazoo Valley CC 88, Lansing CC 59

So, the best team in that region blows away the second-best team by 29. Mott beat Kalamazoo Valley just last weekend by 28.

You could make a strong argument, going on the last three years, that the top 2-3 teams in the MCCAA Eastern Conference are/were more deserving of spots in the national tournament than any team in the Western Conference.

Henry Ford beat KVCC twice and St. Clair beat them in their only meeting. So, you  have two teams that are clearly better than KVCC who have to sit it out. I think the solution is one larger regional with two spots awarded to the national tournament.

QUIT DISRESPECTING WHAT KALAMAZOO VALLEY HAS ACCOMPLISHED. THEY’VE DESERVED EVERYTHING THAT THEY’VE RECEIVED. COACH SHILTS IS A MAN OF UNMATCHED INTEGRITY AND CHARACTER & I GUARANTEE THAT CAN’T BE SAID ABOUT ANY OF THE COACHES FROM THE MCCAA EAST OTHER THAN A FEW. SO SAY WHAT YOU WANT ABOUT THE EAST/WEST DIFFERENCE, KVCC IS GOING TO THE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT…AND FOR THE RECORD, I HOPE THEY GET MOTT (WHO LOST TO LANSING EARLIER IN THE YEAR BEFORE THEY WERE FORCED TO FORFEIT). THEY AREN’T INVISIBLE LIKE EVERYBODY ON THAT SIDE OF THE STATE SEEMS TO BELIEVE.

    • Jared Field says:

I think everyone in Flint hopes they get Mott, too.

West was week this year, that’s just a fact.

If all these teams were in one regional, like it used to be, would KVCC have made it? I doubt it, but stranger things have happened. I mean, few expected Delta to make the final.

    • Chris Matheson says:

Mott possesses many superhero powers–invisibility is just the tip of the iceberg!

mott is deep. and we’ll be ready for anyone north, south, east and west.

  3. Cinderella says:

    any brackets yet?

  4. Jared Field says:

Not yet. Mott should be the no. 1 seed.

  5. Steve Gomesh says:

Valley lost to St. Clair by 7 in a close game. Henry Ford and KVCC were both 10 point games almost the whole game til the fouls at the end. Valley beat Delta by 30+… KVCC’s big men are the best in the conference. They have the best size by far

    • Anthony Coggins says:

“KVCC’s big men are the best in the conference. They have the best size by far”

Really?? I bet Doug Anderson and Mike Brigham would have something to say about that…as would Terrance Tubbs, Winthrop Thomas…

      • JDM20 says:

Anderson has very little post game. Don’t take that as a diss on him, he just isn’t a post player. I meant collectively, they have the best big men. No questions asked. Betcher from Valley is as good as any of those guys. Look at the size of the guys on their roster. 5 or 6 6-6 or taller guys

      • Jared Field says:

Who cares about size? I want to know if they are good. They didn’t look particularly good against Mott. Who is recruiting them?

  6. Anthony Coggins says:

    JDM20…

You espouse the value of Mike Betcher, when Anderson and Brigham had their way with him. They had more points, rebounds, assists…Betcher couldn’t do a darn thing in the state final.

And having five guys 6′ 6″ or taller doesn’t mean a lot if they can’t put the ball in the hole. Height does not equate to talent. Anderson and Brigham play the post, ergo, they are post players whether they fit your definition or not. They beat KVCC and your “team of giants” soundly. Best in the conference reside in KVCC? Hardly…as much as I root against HFCC, I would take Tubbs and Winthrop Thomas (Delta) over anyone on the KVCC roster.
