Buctown boys are back: Flint Beecher in final four

Posted: March 23, 2011 by Jared Field in High School

I’ve been  pretty consistent with my contention that the best basketball coach in Mid-Michigan is in Buctown. Mike Williams continues to do a tremendous job with Flint Beecher, a team that’s young enough to pencil in to the final four through 2013.

Last night, sophomore Monte Morris had 17 points with 10 rebounds and 10 assists to guide the Bucs to a win over Western Michigan Christian, a team loaded with height by comparison and a program that had won 29 consecutive games.

But, for those who have followed Williams’ during his career, height doesn’t really matter against Beecher. Williams will win with a 6-foot center if that’s who is walking through the gym door.

I often talk about how Mott has really upheld the mantle for basketball in Flint recently, but I need to give more credit to Beecher. They play hard-nosed, get-after-it basketball like it was played in years past.

Go Bucs.

On top of being a good coach, Mike Williams is a hell of a good guy. I remember him from student teaching in Flushing. He will/has done very well for Beecher and is a great role model for the young men and women at Beecher High. GO BUCS!
