Come hear the familiar laughter of students and the swoosh of the basketball at “Hoops Madness”. On March 26, 2011, more than 1,000 YouthQuest students will shoot hoops on the basketball court during Saturday’s “Hoops Madness”. The event will be held at Ballenger Field House on the Mott Community College (MCC) campus, beginning at 9:30 a.m. YouthQuest is a free after school program for K-8 students in Flint and Genesee County, managed by the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce. All 15 YouthQuest schools will participate in the basketball event, playing in three shifts: 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.; 12:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.; and 2:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Mayor Dayne Walling is expected to stop by around 10:00 a.m. to shoot hoops with the students. Also, former WNBA player and two-time Hall of Fame inductee Linnell McKenney will engage the eager athletes with demonstrations that include ball handling, shooting drills and much more. McKenney is also a YouthQuest site team leader at Washington Elementary located in Flint.
The objective of “Hoops Madness” is to get kids moving, experience teamwork, and provide lessons in sportsmanship, respect and social skills – all part of the new athletic program.
Ballenger Field House is located at 1401 E. Court St., in Flint.
