Former Flint Northern guard scores 16 points against Butler Tuesday night

Posted: November 30, 2011 by Jared Field in College, JUCO

Cameron Lefear, an unheralded 6-3 guard from Flint Northern, scored 16 points for Oakland City University (Indiana) last night in a loss to Butler. Lefear is probably the best “feel good” story of the year for basketball in Flint. No one, myself included, thought he would make it at the college level. He didn’t play much in high school on a very average team at Northern; clearly, however, he didn’t let that fact keep him from getting to work.

Lefear, a sophomore, has started all six games this season for OCU and is averaging more than 13 points per game.

I love stories like this. It reminds me of Torian Harris from several years back. He too was unheralded at Saginaw High, but he kept the basketball dream alive at Lansing CC, then at the University of Nebraska – Omaha. The next step, if he chooses that route, could be professional basketball overseas.

The lesson is simple: Don’t let your circumstances dictate the realization of your potential.

  1. Man…you have got to love this story. The young man went to JUCO for a year and worked on his body and game. He deserves a lot of credit for maturning mentally and that is what was the biggest key. Nice read…

Torrian Harris was a great player and went unrecognized in highschool and college. He was one of the leading scorers and rebounders at LCC and he was phenomenal at UNO. Seriously this guy can go overseas and be a great player with chances to make it to the NBA. He has an exceptional vertical and he’s only about 5’11 no taller then 6’0….Great article!

Off topic but, do you guys know if Archie Robinson and earl Jordan are now at bentley? With that coaching staff how good will they be? Any good players?

Kudos to the young man. OCU is a good school. A very small campus and a christian school. The more important aspect is that there are DII schools that players can attend and have success without having all league honors in high school.. The program played in Hawaii every other season and would spend a week there in December. Mike Sandifer is a good coach and the AD. The program is similar to Spring Arbor and has played Spring Arbor in the NCCCA tournament. I know all about OCU. My oldest son played there before transferring to Southern Indiana. Tell his family to stop in Princeton, Indiana and have dinner at the amish restaurant.
