Still reppin’ for Flint: Mott basketball now alone atop NJCAA national poll

Posted: December 7, 2011 by Jared Field in JUCO

Steve Schmidt and the Mott Bears, fresh off their blowout victory over archrival Lansing on Monday night, are now alone atop the latest NJCAA national poll.

This is the first week of boys’ basketball in the Flint area, so it’s fresh in my mind. In Flint, the glory days of old are gone. In fact, we’re even quite a distance from the renaissance marked by the emergence of the Flintstones. High School basketball isn’t what it used to be in Flint, and that’s hard to dispute.

But, by God, we’ve still got Mott.

To be honest, Mott’s basketball program is our only hard-wire connection to the basketball greatness of years gone by in Flint. This program is a powerhouse at the JUCO level and is the sole reason I can still call Flint the Basketball City.

The Bears, led by Steve Schmidt, are 7-0 and alone atop the latest NJCAA II poll. Sophomore guard John Taylor continues to lead the nation in scoring at 30 points per game.

Mott travels to Jackson to take on the Jets tonight.
