Goodrich High School has hired former International Academy of Flint head coach and current Flint Powers assistant Tim Tenneriello for its vacant head coaching position.
As you’ve read over the last couple weeks, longtime Goodrich head coach Gary Barns is on administrative leave, effectively a suspension, for the 2012-13 school year. Goodrich needed a competent coach at the last minute, and Tenneriello certainly meets that criterion.
A 2007 graduate of Genesee Christian School, Tenneriello has played for and coached with three of the Flint area’s finest coaches — Dan Chapman, Chris Matheson and Jeremy Trent. I remember watching Tenneriello play at GCS and thinking that his future was on the sideline. He was far from the best athlete on the floor, but he was a leader and a very cerebral player.
Matheson, the head coach at IAF (and Genesee Christian’s rival in class D at the time), thought so much of Tenneriello as a player, he asked him to join his staff not long after graduation.
Even though this gig, at least ostensibly, is only for one year, the Martians have hired a young coach with limitless potential. He’s a student of the game and it’s past time for him to start teaching. This is a very solid hire. Goodrich is making the best out of a bad situation.
