The pride of northern Michigan, Ben Simons, made his collegiate debut over the weekend and looked pretty darn good doing it – he scored 12 points on four second half 3-pointers.
He also swiped a game-high four steals.
Simons, only by the sheer elitism of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, was robbed of the Mr. Basketball award last season because Drake isn’t prestigious enough for Michigan’s coaching cabal.
The gave the award to Derrick Nix who lost some weight and went to Michigan State.
Simons finished second in the voting and was the best all-around player in the state as a senior (30 ppg and eight boards) and the player who had the best individual season — the latter is the award’s criterion, in fact.
